NOBO's Picks March 2020

New Orleans Box Office's top picks for theatre and dance productions and events in March 2020.

An Original Musical Fantasy By Trey Ming

The brand new musical from the same composer and producer behind I Wrote a Song and The Night Fiona Flawless Went Mad takes the stage at the Twilight Room (the theater behind the Allways Lounge and Cabaret). Slotted Spoon Productions and Sisterhood Studios team up to bring New Orleans, FAIRYKIND THE MUSICAL.

Magic has been outlawed in the Everworld.  It is damnable even to mention the long-extinct beings from which Magic first came - the legendary Fairykind.

Best of the TW Fest: In the Bar of a Tokyo Hotel

The Tennessee Williams & New Orleans Literary Festival returns to its home in the historic French Quarter for its 34th annual celebration of contemporary literature, culture, theater, and the works of Tennessee Williams. More than a typical book festival, TWNOLF showcases award-winning writers, actors, musicians, and other artists in over 150 events in the French Quarter and other New Orleans venues. Out of all the event we are most excited for Tennessee Williams Theatre Company's IN THE BAR OF A TOKYO HOTEL. This Tennessee Williams classic is reimagined in a futuristic Tokyo by director Torey Hayward. The play follows Miriam trapped in a crowded Tokyo as her husband, Mark, works diligently in a separate hotel room on what he believes is the next breakthrough in modern art. She attempts to find solace in the chic bar of the hotel. The production will highlight the way in which love of self, love of another, and love of passion drives each of us across boundaries within the human experience.

New Orleans Premiere of VESSELS

VESSELS is a seven-woman harmonic meditation on the transcendental possibilities of song during the Middle Passage. Experienced within an interactive and acoustically rich sculptural environment that invokes those infamous ships, this interdisciplinary ritual performance explores singing as a survival tool and asks, “What does freedom sound like in a space of confinement?”

With many collaborators, VESSELS was co-created as an exercise in speculative history. VESSELS does not seek to re-stage the Middle Passage.VESSELS has attempted to transmute a part of the Middle Passage’s cultural, psychic, and spiritual wounds and to contribute to intergenerational healing that extends to the stories, places, spaces, and bodies swept into the currents of the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
