Theatre and Dance Picks for May

May is always an exciting month for theatre in NOLA. Many of our local theaters have their final production of the season and go out with a bang! It is also the month of outdoor performances and shows that are geared more toward families. Although there are many productions and events happening this month we have chosen 5 to highlight, each bring something exciting to the stage!

Every year the NOLA Project commissions a new play specifically to be performed in the NOMA Sculpture Garden in the spring! This is such a magical New Orleans theatre tradition. Audiences bring their own seating (there are different sections depending on if you have a chair or a blanket), local food trucks come to feed the huger theatre-goers, and the play happens in the garden as the sun is setting. This year's garden show is THE HENCHMAN by Michael Aaron Santos.

A wondrous new sequel to A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM following Jacob, the little changeling boy who Oberon and Titania quarreled over in Shakespeare's play. Prepare yourself for an adventure including fairies, Amazons, mischief, and revenge.

THE HENCHMAN: A SHAKESPEARE STORY by Michael Aaron Santos May 8-26 Besthoff Sculpture Garden at the New Orleans Museum of Art $12-$28

Join NOBO May 15th for a costumed evening at the garden! Costume contest, photo booth, prizes, and more. Come dressed as a fairy or any other Shakespearean Character. More Info Click Here! DISCOUNTED WEDNESDAY NIGHT TICKETS WITH PROMO CODE: HUMPDAY504 Buy Now

The last show of the season at The Fortress of Lushington, a blackbox theatre in the Marigny, is a new play by local playwright Kurt Arja Opprecht. DOS COYOTES brings New Orleans actors Kimberly Kaye and Edward Carter Simon together for the first time since their extended run of Hedwig and the Angry Inch last fall.

A romantic comedy that tells the story of Carlos, the lone survivor of a catastrophic border crossing, and Piper a woman trying to escape the American Dream.

DOS COYOTES by Kurt Arja Opprecht May 10 – 25 Fortress of Lushington, 2215 Burgundy St $10-$20

One of our favorite productions at InFringe is back! The MOMologues is having two special Mother's Day performances at Cafe Istanbul. This show is literally had us laughing and crying. It's perfect for people who are mothers, have a mother(s), know a mother, truly a lovely way to spend a Sunday.

Margeaux Fanning's The MOMologues is a series of monologues by NOLA writers on mothers: being a mother; relationships with mothers; and reminiscences of mothers. The show stars Margeaux Fanning, Crystal Thomassie, Winter Randall, Rudy San Miguel, Meredith Mullins, Jen Pagan and Brandon Sean Nicholas performing a piece by Alison Logan. THE MOMOLOGUES Sunday May 12th Cafe Istanbul $15

These unique, strange, inventive, bizarre, touching, hysterical plays are produced, directed, and performed by professional artists from local theatre and dance companies.
